How do I use the Activity Summary report?

Use this color-coded summary of scores to keep track of progress and proficiency.

Updated over a week ago

The Activity Summary report provides a high-level view of student progress on their Quill activities. The report can be filtered by class, activity pack, and date range. It shows students' progress at a glance and proficiency color scores in each activity, along with average scores, a breakdown of concepts, and much more!

Accessing the Activity Summary

To access your Activity Summary report, navigate to the Activity Summary report in the My Reports tab.

Color-Coded Scores

The key of the score ranges is located at the top of the screen.

  • A green activity square indicates that the student frequently demonstrated the relevant skill and an activity percentage score of 83-100%.

  • A yellow activity square indicates that the student sometimes demonstrated the relevant skill and an activity percentage score of 32-82%.

  • A red activity square indicates that the student rarely demonstrated the relevant skill and an activity percentage score of 0-31%.

Activity Icons

The activity icons key is located directly under the score breakdown key.

The icons in each activity square indicate the type of activity (learning tool):

Activity Status

  • Completed activity that is not scored: Indicated by a blue activity square.

  • Completed and scored activity: Indicated by a green, yellow, or red activity square.

  • Replayed scored activity: Indicated by a blue circle with a number in the top right corner of a green, yellow, or red activity square. The number indicates the number of replay attempts. The color of the activity square indicates the proficiency achieved in the latest attempt.

  • In progress or paused activity: Indicated by a white activity square with a blue clock in the upper right corner. This activity has been saved and can be resumed from the student's dashboard.

  • Scheduled activity: Indicated by a gray activity square with a green clock. This activity has been scheduled to show on a student's dashboard at a later date and is not yet available in the student's dashboard.

  • Locked (Staggered Release) activity: Indicated by a black lock in the upper right corner of the activity square. This diagnostic practice recommendation activity is locked until the student fully completes the currently open practice recommendation activity pack.

  • Assigned activity that has not yet been started: Indicated by a gray activity square. This activity is available to be completed on the student's dashboard.

🟦 Understanding Blue Activity Squares

Activity squares for completed Diagnostics/Writing Skills Surveys, Quill Lessons, and Quill Reading for Evidence activities will appear blue to indicate that the activity has been completed. These types of activities are indicated as completed because they are not scored and will not display a color of green, yellow, or red indicating a proficiency score. However, even if an activity is not scored, you are able to see students' specific responses to the prompts in any activity by hovering over and clicking the respective activity square that is blue.

Activity Summary Filters

Filter by Class

To view the activities that a specific class has completed, use the class filter in the top left corner of the Activity Summary report page.

Filter by Activity Pack

The activity pack filter defaults to All activity packs, which provides you with information about every activity in every activity pack that you have assigned to students. You can filter by specific activity packs to only see information for activities in certain activity packs for each student.

Filter by Date

To view the activities that have been assigned within a certain period of time between dates, use the date filter at the top right of the page, which defaults to showing activities for All time. Once dates have been selected, the Activity Summary report will save the selected dates for subsequent visits to the Activity Summary report until the selected dates are manually cleared.

Activity Performance Breakdown

Hover your mouse over any activity square to view a comprehensive performance breakdown for that individual activity. Please read below to learn about the information that you can see when you hover over an activity square.

  • The objectives of the activity

  • Dates that are relevant to the activity

    • The date when the activity was published

    • The date when the activity was/is due

    • The date when the activity was completed

    • The date when the activity was most recently attempted

  • The percentage of the target skills that the student got correct for the activity

  • The time that the student spent on the activity

  • The number of responses when the student either correctly or incorrectly used the target skills

Click on an activity square to view the Activity Analysis report for that activity, in which you can see specific responses that a student submitted, the targeted feedback that a student received, the percentage score that a student received (if available), and more.

Time Spent

The time spent on an activity only accounts for the time the student actively worked on an activity. If a student is inactive on the page for 30 seconds or more, switches to a new tab, or opens another window, the timer will stop until they return to the activity.

Grading with the Activity Summary

As students complete activities, the Activity Summary report provides valuable information about their students' progress through their activities, writing skill strengths, and writing skill areas for growth.

Individual Activity Scores

Hover over an activity square and in a Score: field to see a student's percentage score for a completed attempt on an activity.

Average Quill Score

Look in the top right corner of a student's Activity Summary report to see the average percentage score of all of the scored activities that they have completed.

Average Activity Pack Score

Filter by a specific activity pack so that the average percentage score in the top right of a student's Activity Summary report only reflects the scored activities in that specific activity pack that have been completed.

If you have aligned your activity packs to specific concepts, filtering by a specific activity pack in the Activity Summary report will allow you to grade at the concept level.

Furthermore, facilitating mastery-based learning and encouraging students to replay activities until they reach the proficiency score of Proficient can improve their writing skills, confidence, and persistence!

Tip 💡: You can also use the date filters to narrow down the activity information that you see and to see a percentage score for a specific date range.
