Main Report Sections: Smart Groups vs. Performance Breakdown
The Skills Report contains two main sections that help you explore your students’ data at both a macro and micro level.
Smart Groups
Smart Groups automatically organize students or skills into actionable groups—such as Meeting Goal, Approaching Goal, or Needs Support—based on their Momentum Scores. You can use this section to quickly identify trends across your class.
Each group is color-coded to make it easy to see where attention is needed.
Performance Breakdown
The Performance Breakdown provides a detailed table that allows you to sort and filter by skill or by student.
Sort by Momentum Score, Exposure, or Performance Trend.
Filter by class, skill category, or student for deeper insights.
💡Tip: You can start with Smart Groups for a quick overview, then use Performance Breakdown to drill down into specifics.
Choosing Your Perspective: By Skill vs. By Student
Each section of the Skills Report can be viewed at two levels, depending on the level of insight you need.
By Skill
The By Skill level displays class-wide averages across multiple skills or sub-skills. Use this level to quickly identify which areas your class is mastering and which may need more practice.
The report also organizes skills into two levels to help you interpret data across multiple layers of learning:
Skill Categories – broad domains such as Capitalization, Sentence Structure, or Verb Agreement.
Skill Sub-Categories – specific, teachable concepts within each category; for example, Capitalizing Names of People is a sub-category under the Capitalization skill. You can see all sub-categories by filtering for a certain Skill Category in any report view.
💡 Tip: You can further filter the By Skill view by student to see how an individual learner performs across all skills.
By Student
The By Student level displays each student’s performance on a specific skill.
Use this level to:
Compare individual progress within a single skill.
Identify students who may need targeted support or additional enrichment.
Understanding the Metrics
Momentum Score
The Momentum Score is Quill’s dynamic measure of skill growth. It rewards accuracy on earlier attempts and gives more weight to recent work, showing both consistency and improvement over time.
While the Activity-level scores found in other reports (e.g., Activity Summary, Activity Scores) show what a student got right, Momentum Scores show how they’re improving.
💡 Tip: You can use Momentum Scores to identify students who are gaining momentum, even if they haven’t yet reached mastery.
Skill Exposure
Skill Exposure measures how much practice a student has completed for a given skill. This helps you interpret how reliable a Momentum Score is.
Exposure Level | Questions Answered | Meaning |
Low | 1–5 | Indicates minimal practice. A low confidence alert icon (⚠) will appear next to scores with low exposure. |
Medium | 6–14 | Moderate practice; shows developing progress. |
High | 15+ | Strong practice base; Momentum Score is highly reliable. |
Performance Trend
When the Skills Report’s data is displayed By Student or By Skill, the Performance Trend indicates whether a student’s Momentum Score is Trending Up, Trending Down, or Steady.
Trending Up: Improvement and growing mastery.
Trending Down: Possible learning gaps or reduced engagement.
Steady: Consistent performance, ideal for monitoring ongoing growth.
Replay Rate
When the Skills Report’s data is displayed By Student , the Replay Rate shows what percentage of a student’s practice comes from replayed questions. When students replay an activity, those questions are always eligible to earn full points.
Replay Rate is calculated by dividing the number of questions replayed by the total number of questions answered, offering meaningful insight into a student’s effort, persistence, and learning process.
Understanding Student Progress with the Skills Report metrics
When reviewed in combination, Performance Trend, Momentum Score, and Replay Rate can reveal how students are engaging with their learning and where they might need additional support.
Scenario | What It Suggests |
Performance Trend: Trending Up Replay Rate: High | The student is putting in genuine effort to improve. Consistent improvement after replays demonstrates persistence and steady growth. |
Performance Trend: Trending Down Replay Rate: High | The student may be struggling despite repeated attempts. |
Performance Trend: Steady Replay Rate: High | The student may be replaying activities excessively to inflate scores without meaningful improvement. Check in to ensure replays are being used productively. |
Momentum Score: Low Performance Trend: Trending Down Replay Rate: Low | The student may not be making full use of opportunities to review and improve. This pattern may invite a conversation about motivation or learning strategies. |
💡 Tip: Use Replay Rate together with Momentum Score and Performance Trend to see not just how often students are practicing, but how effectively that practice leads to growth.
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as “recent” work when weighing the Momentum Score?
What counts as “recent” work when weighing the Momentum Score?
The Momentum Score gives more weight to a student’s most recent work, which is defined as the last 20 questions they completed. This ensures the score reflects a student’s current learning and progress rather than only their cumulative history.
What happens if a student switches classes or teachers? Does their Skill Exposure reset?
What happens if a student switches classes or teachers? Does their Skill Exposure reset?
If a student switches classes or teachers, their Skill Exposure does not reset when you view the All Practice view in the Skills Report. This view includes a student’s entire learning history on Quill, including work from previous teachers and classes.
Skill Exposure continues to accumulate across all classes, giving you a complete picture of the student’s practice and progress. Access to this view requires a verified teacher with a School or District Premium subscription.
Can I view a student's Momentum Score history or filter the report by a specific timeframe (e.g., a six-week grading period)?
Can I view a student's Momentum Score history or filter the report by a specific timeframe (e.g., a six-week grading period)?
The report allows you to toggle between “All Practice” (the student’s full Quill history) and “Class Practice” (only work completed in your current class). However, it does not currently include a custom date range filter for specific timeframes such as grading periods.
If you believe your classroom would benefit from this feature, our team always welcomes feedback through the Quill Product Feedback page.
If I change the Momentum Score Goal, does it only affect the Smart Groups in the Skills Report, or does it change any other scores or reports in Quill?
If I change the Momentum Score Goal, does it only affect the Smart Groups in the Skills Report, or does it change any other scores or reports in Quill?
Changing the Momentum Score Goal only affects Smart Groups within the Skills Report. It’s a global setting for your teacher account, meaning the new goal will apply to the Skills Report for all of your classes, but it will not affect any other scores or reports in Quill.
What is the difference between the "Activity-Level Score" and the "Momentum Score," and which one should I use for student grading?
What is the difference between the "Activity-Level Score" and the "Momentum Score," and which one should I use for student grading?
The Activity-Level Score is a traditional percentage that shows how many questions a student eventually answered correctly, even if it took multiple attempts.
The Momentum Score is a dynamic measure that rewards early correctness and emphasizes recent growth, providing a broader picture of a student’s progress over time.
We recommend using the Activity-Level Score for student grading, as this is the score students see in their dashboards. The Momentum Score is designed primarily as an instructional tool for teachers, offering insights into learning growth and progress trends.
