Is a Writing Skills Survey different from a Quill Diagnostic?

Learn about the differences between a Quill Diagnostic and a Writing Skills Survey.

Updated over a week ago

Teachers can assign one of the 16 Quill Diagnostics/Writing Skills Surveys. When students complete the Quill Diagnostic/Writing Skills Survey, Quill will create plans of practice recommendation activities for each student based on their performance on the Quill Diagnostic/Writing Skills Survey.

For each level of Quill Diagnostic, there is a Baseline Diagnostic (Pre) and a Growth Diagnostic (Post).

  • A Baseline Diagnostic (Pre) is a pre-test intended to initially assess a student's writing skills so that Quill can create a plan of practice recommendation activities based on the student's performance on the Baseline Diagnostic (Pre).

  • A Growth Diagnostic (Post) is a post-test intended to subsequently assess a student's writing skills after they have already completed the corresponding Baseline Diagnostic (Pre) and the practice recommendation activities associated with the Baseline Diagnostic (Pre). After a student completes a Growth Diagnostic (Post), Quill will create a plan of practice recommendation activities based on the student's performance on the Growth Diagnostic (Post). Please note that the practice recommendation activities for the Growth Diagnostic (Post) will be different from those for the Baseline Diagnostic (Pre). For this reason, a Growth Diagnostic (Post) will be locked until you have assigned its corresponding Baseline Diagnostic (Pre).

The Writing Skills Surveys, developed in partnership with CollegeBoard®, are aligned with the CollegeBoard’s Pre-AP®, AP®, and SpringBoard® curricula and can be used in lieu of Quill Diagnostics for students learning one of these curricula. For example, a teacher who is using the SpringBoard® curriculum could assign the SpringBoard® Writing Skills Survey in lieu of the Starter Baseline Diagnostic (Pre) or Intermediate Baseline Diagnostic (Pre).
