How do I merge duplicate student accounts?

If your students have duplicate accounts, you can merge them to prevent confusion.

Updated over a week ago

Tip πŸ’‘ When merging duplicate student accounts, please ensure that you are merging the correct student accounts as reversing the merging of duplicate student accounts is not possible.

If your students have duplicate accounts, merging these duplicate accounts reduces confusion by ensuring that each student's activity data is consolidated in one account and that each student has only one method to log into their account.

How to determine if a student has duplicate accounts

Typically, there are two scenarios that suggest that a student may have duplicate accounts.

  • If a student reports that they cannot see an activity that has been assigned to them, then they may have duplicate accounts.

  • If a student reports that they have completed an activity, but their activity data is not showing up in the data reports, then they may have duplicate accounts.

If you believe that your students have duplicate accounts, the first place to look is the My Classes page.

Click on the class in which the student who may have duplicate accounts is rostered and look in the Students section for this class

In the Students section, you will see a list of the students rostered in this class. For each student, you will see either Username, Google, Clever, or Canvas listed in the Log-in Method column, which indicates the method that the student signed up for their account.

Tip πŸ’‘ Typically, students with duplicate accounts have signed up for their accounts multiple times and have used a different method to sign up each time. For this reason, when looking for duplicate accounts, look for student names that appear more than once and have a different method in the Log-in Method column for each appearance.

How to merge duplicate accounts

To merge duplicate accounts, please navigate to the My Classes page and click on the class in which the student whose duplicate accounts you would like to merge is rostered.

In the Students section for this class, you will see a list of the students who are rostered in this class.

Find the student who has duplicate Quill accounts and click the ellipsis button in the Actions column to the far right of the student's name.

Then, click the Merge accounts option in the dropdown menu that appears.

On the form that subsequently appears, select the primary account (i.e. the account into which the other account will be merged) and the account to merge (i.e. the account that will be merged).

Check the boxes next to the I understand... statements and click the Merge accounts section.

Clicking the Merge accounts button will successfully merge the student's duplicate accounts. To determine the method that the student should use to log in to their account, look in the Log-in Method column field for that student. You will see either Username, Google, Clever, or Canvas listed in the Log-in Method column.
