Filtering results

Use the filters on the left-hand side of the report page to narrow down the results displayed in all report views.

  • Timeframe

    • The timeframe is limited to “This school year” because a full year of data is required in order for this report to be meaningful. Additionally, please note that due to recent changes to how we score diagnostics, only the 2023-2024 school year is currently available. The report will be updated on an ongoing basis to support future school years.

  • School

    • This filter displays all schools for which you are an admin. If you'd prefer to view school-specific data, select only that specific school.

  • Grade

    • This filter displays all grades, regardless of whether there is a classroom with this grade at your school.

    • The “No grade set” option refers to classes without a grade.

  • Teacher

    • This filter displays all teachers at schools for which you are an admin.

  • Classroom

    • This filter displays all classrooms at schools for which you are an admin.

Tips 💡
The items available to select for the Teacher and Classroom filters are dynamic. For example, if you selected “Grade 5” on the Grade filter, the Teacher filter will only show teachers with a grade 5 classroom. As noted above, the Grade filter will display all grades regardless of your selections.

The School, Grade, Teacher, and Classroom filters allow you to select multiple items. For example, you might want to view data for just grades 7 and 8.

After selecting all of the desired filters, you must click the “Apply filters” button to narrow down the results displayed:

Navigation tabs

Each tab at the top of the report page functions as a distinct report, exploring different facets of diagnostic-related data and offering varying levels of granularity.

Performance Overview

  • This tab provides a high-level overview of your diagnostic data (including growth) on a diagnostic-by-diagnostic basis.

  • You can use the “Group by” option to view your data by grade (default), teacher, or classroom.

Breakdown of each column

  • Diagnostic Name:

    • This report shows all of the diagnostics that have been assigned by teachers connected to your account.

    • Each diagnostic offering includes a Pre assessment of each student’s writing skills, around 40 practice activities recommended by the diagnostic based on the Pre performance, and a Post diagnostic to measure growth after the practice activities are completed.

    • Diagnostic will not be displayed in this report until at least one teacher has assigned it within the filters you have selected.

  • Pre Diagnostic Completed: The total number of students who completed the Pre diagnostic of all of the students assigned the Pre diagnostic.

  • Completed Activities:

    • The total number of students who have completed the practice activities linked to this diagnostic.

    • A student is counted once the student has completed at least one practice activity linked to this diagnostic.

  • Average Activities & Time Spent:

    • Each diagnostic is linked to recommended practice activities. For the students who have completed activities, this shows the average number of completed activities and the average time spent per student.

    • This counts the practice activities connected to this particular diagnostic - not the total number of activities that the student has practiced on Quill.

  • Post Diagnostic Completed:

    • The total number of students who completed the Post diagnostic of all of the students assigned the Post diagnostic.

    • Students are not included in this count until their teacher assigns the Post diagnostic to them.

  • Overall Skill Growth:

    • The average increase in growth scores across all of the skills.

    • The Performance by Skill report shows the average increase in questions answered correctly for each skill, and the overall growth is the average increase across all skills.

    • The growth score is based on only the students who have completed both the Pre and Post diagnostic. The growth score does not include students who only did the Pre.

    • Note: This value is weighted by the number of students in each sub-group (i.e. grade, teacher, or classroom.)

Performance by Skill

  • This tab allows you to view growth for each individual skill covered by a specific diagnostic.

  • You can use the “Group by” option to view your data by grade (default), teacher, or classroom.

Breakdown of each column

  • Pre Skill Score:

    • The averaged number of questions answered correctly for this skill on the Pre diagnostic.

    • This is the average score for all of the students selected in the filters.

    • The number in parentheses represents the number of students who completed the Pre diagnostic.

  • Post Skill Score

    • The averaged number of questions answered correctly for this skill on the Post diagnostic.

    • This is the average score for all of the students selected in the filters.

    • The number in parentheses represents the number of students who completed the Post diagnostic.

  • Growth Results

    • The increase in the averaged number of questions answered correctly for this skill from the Pre to the Post diagnostic.

    • This is the average increase for all of the students selected in the filters.

    • The growth score is based on only the students who have completed both the Pre and Post diagnostic. The growth score does not include students who only did the Pre.

    • The number in parentheses represents the number of students who completed the Post diagnostic.

    • Note: This value is weighted by the number of students in each sub-group (i.e. grade, teacher, or classroom).

  • Students Improved Skill

    • The number of students who improved in the skill by answering more questions correctly on the Post diagnostic than they did on the Pre. This includes students who gained Some Proficiency and Gained Full Proficiency in this skill.

    • This total count (”of __ students”) includes all students who completed both the Pre and the Post diagnostic and are selected in the filters.

  • Students Without Improvement

    • The total number of students who did not show improvement in this skill by not answering more questions correctly in the Post than the Pre (and who were not already proficient). Quill provides a recommended activity pack for each skill so that educators can easily assign practice activities so that students can practice this skill.

    • This total count (”of __ students”) includes all students who completed both the Pre and the Post diagnostic and are selected in the filters.

  • Students Maintained Proficiency

    • The total number of students who answered all questions for this skill correctly on both the Pre and the Post diagnostic.

    • This total count (”of __ students”) includes all students who completed both the Pre and the Post diagnostic and are selected in the filters.

Performance by Student

  • This tab provides a student-level view of your diagnostic data. It is the most granular way to view your diagnostic data.

  • You can drill in to see how an individual student performed on a skill-by-skill basis.

  • 50 students are displayed by default. To view more students, click the “Load more” button.

  • You can use filters to get an even more granular view of the data. For example, you might want to focus on how the students in a specific grade performed. When you apply filters a count will be displayed indicating how many students from the total pool for the currently selected diagnostic meet your criteria (for example, “158 matches from 497 students”).

  • If a student completed the same diagnostic in multiple classrooms, they will appear multiple times on this report. In such cases, the completion dates of the Pre and Post diagnostics will be listed in parentheses after the student’s name to distinguish the entries. Please use a filter to view a student’s result for a specific teacher or classroom.

Breakdown of each column

  • Pre to Post: Improved Skills: The number of skills the student showed improvement in on the Post diagnostic relative to the Pre diagnostic. A skill is considered improved if the student answered more questions for that skill correctly on the Post diagnostic than they did on the Pre.

  • Pre: Questions Correct: The total number of questions answered correctly on the Pre diagnostic.

  • Pre: Skills Proficient: The number of skills the student demonstrated proficiency in on the Pre diagnostic. A student demonstrates proficiency by answering all questions for that skill correctly. If a student is not fully proficient in a skill, Quill provides a recommended activity pack so that teachers can easily assign practice activities.

  • Total Activities & Time Spent: Each diagnostic is linked to practice activities. This is the total number of activities completed that are linked to this particular diagnostic - not the total number of activities that the student has practiced on Quill.

  • Post: Questions Correct: The total number of questions answered correctly on the Post diagnostic.

  • Post: Skills Improved or Maintained: The number of skills the student maintained or showed improvement in on the Post diagnostic. A skill is considered “improved” if the student answered more questions for that skill correctly on the Post diagnostic than they did on the Pre. A skill is considered “maintained” if the student answered all questions for the skill correctly on both the Pre and the Post diagnostic.

Things to know

  • The Admin Diagnostic Growth report only displays data related to diagnostics assigned by a teacher. For example:

    • If no teacher assigned the “Intermediate Baseline Diagnostic (Pre)”, then it will not appear in the table on the “Performance Overview” tab.

    • If only teachers with “Grade 7” classrooms assigned a diagnostic, then only “Grade 7” will appear in the table on the “Performance Overview” and “Performance by Skill” tabs (when grouping by grade)

    • If a specific teacher didn’t assign any diagnostics, then they will not be listed in the table on the “Performance Overview” or “Performance by Skill” tabs (when grouping by teacher).

  • A Post diagnostic will be excluded from this report if it was not completed in the same timeframe (i.e. school year) as the Pre diagnostic.
