How do I read the Student responses report for a Growth Diagnostic?

The Student responses report for a Growth Diagnostic shows students' proficiencies and responses for a Growth Diagnostic.

The Student responses report for a Growth Diagnostic compares a student's Growth Diagnostic and Baseline Diagnostic data and shows a student's percentage score for both a Baseline Diagnostic and Growth Diagnostic, the number of writing skills for which a student is proficient based on their performance on both a Baseline Diagnostic and Growth Diagnostic, and a student's responses to the prompts in the Baseline Diagnostic and Growth Diagnostic.

Access the Student responses report for a Growth Diagnostic

Navigate to the View Reports tab and click the Diagnostics sub-tab.

On the Diagnostics report landing page, you will see each Quill Diagnostic assigned to your classes. Use the dropdown menu in the upper right corner of the page to select a class and see only the Quill Diagnostics assigned to that class.

Click the View results and recommendations button for the Growth Diagnostic whose Student responses report you want to see.

Read the Student responses report for a Growth Diagnostic

In the table on the Student responses report, look in the Pre to Post: Improved Skills column to see the number of writing skills for which a student exhibited proficiency growth.


​In the table on the Student responses report, look in the Pre: Questions Correct column to see the number and percentage of prompts to which a student submitted a correct response while completing the Baseline Diagnostic and look in the Post: Questions Correct column to see the number and percentage of prompts to which a student submitted a correct response while completing the Growth Diagnostic.

Tip 💡

The Student responses report is the only report where you can see the number and percentage of questions to which a student submitted a correct response when completing a Quill Diagnostic. In all other reports and in a student's Quill account, a completed Quill Diagnostic will only be marked with the copy, Completed. Click here for more information about why students do not see a score for Quill Diagnostics in their student Quill accounts.

In the table on the Student responses report, look in the Pre: Skills Proficient column to see the number of skills for which a student exhibited proficiency while completing the Baseline Diagnostic.

In the table on the Student responses report, look in the Post: Skills Improved or Maintained column to see the number of skills for which a student maintained proficiency or exhibited proficiency growth when their performance on the Growth Diagnostic is compared to their performance on the Baseline Diagnostic.


Clicking a student's name will bring you to a report of each response that the student submitted for each of the prompts in both the Baseline Diagnostic and the Growth Diagnostic.

At the top of the page that appears after you click the View button to the far right of a student's name, you will see a table that shows how the student performed for each writing skill assessed by the Growth Diagnostic.

Below the table at the top of the page that appears after you click the View button to the far right of a student's name, click either the Pre responses or Post responses tab to toggle between seeing the student's responses to the prompts in the Baseline Diagnostic and seeing the student's responses to the prompts in the Growth Diagnostic.
