How does Reading for Evidence show up in the Skills and Standards Reports?

Reading for Evidence is now included in the Skills Report and Standards Report, giving you a more detailed view of how students are progressing on this tool alongside all of your other Quill activities.

Table of Contents

The three Reading for Evidence skills

Each Reading for Evidence activity is scored against up to three specific skills:

  • Develop a Cause with Evidence

  • Develop a Contrast with Evidence

  • Develop a Consequence with Evidence

Which skills appear depends on the activity: Cause, Contrast & Consequence activities cover all three, while Cause & Contrast and Cause & Consequence activities cover two.

You'll see these skills show up in all of Quill's reports, for example:

This update includes activities your students completed before; you don't need to have them redo anything for their past work to be marked with these skills.

📌 Note: Because Reading for Evidence doesn't have a standalone set of practice activities built around each skill, you won't see an "Assign targeted practice" option for the three Reading for Evidence skills in either the Skills Report or the Standards Report. You can still track student performance on them. For more practice, assign additional Reading for Evidence activities from the Activity Library.

Reading for Evidence in the Standards Report

Each of the three Reading for Evidence skills maps to two Common Core standards by grade band: one reading standard (RI.1) and one writing standard (W.2). These also expand to your state's standards, where supported.

📌 Note: State standard coverage for Reading for Evidence is rolling out gradually. If you don't see your state's Reading for Evidence standards yet, check back soon or reach out to support@quill.org with any questions. You can also let us know if there's a state standard you'd like to see added here.

FAQs

Why does a Reading for Evidence activity now show more than one skill?

Reading for Evidence activities are now scored against up to three specific skills (Develop a Cause with Evidence, Develop a Contrast with Evidence, and Develop a Consequence with Evidence) instead of a single general skill. Which skills appear depends on the activity: some cover all three conjunctions, while others cover only two, so you may see 2 or 3 skills depending on the activity your student completed. Scoring itself hasn't changed. This just gives you a more specific view of what was practiced.

Why can't I assign practice for the new Reading for Evidence skills in the Skills Report?

Reading for Evidence doesn't have a set of standalone practice activities the way most skills do, so you won't see an "Assign targeted practice" option for these three skills. You can still use the Skills Report to track how students are performing on them. Assigning follow-up practice just isn't available from there. If you'd like students to get more practice, you can assign additional Reading for Evidence activities from the Activity Library.

Why do I see Reading for Evidence in my Standards Report now?

Reading for Evidence is now included in the Standards Report. Each of the three Reading for Evidence skills maps to two Common Core standards (one reading, one writing), which also map to your state's standards where applicable. These appear like any other standard, with one difference: since Reading for Evidence doesn't have its own practice packs, assigning practice directly from a mapped Reading for Evidence standard isn't available.

I have Reading for Evidence activities that my students completed a while ago. Will new standards be applied to them?

Yes. Any previously completed Reading for Evidence activity, including ones that show as a blue square in the Activity Summary because they were completed before Reading for Evidence activities were scored, is included in the Skills and Standards Reports. You don't need students to redo anything for their past work to count.
