Congratulations, your students have completed a diagnostic and you're on your way to using Quill! Now how do you use the Diagnostics Report to assign recommended activities to your students?

Once you click on the Diagnostics page in "Student Reports" and select your diagnostic, you'll be presented with the recommendations grid.

This grid offers an easy way to view where your students could improve and where they are proficient. The blue highlighted boxes indicate areas where a student needs additional practice, while the unhighlighted boxes indicate areas where the student is proficient. Any of these boxes can be selected to assign them to the student. Once you check the boxes for activities you want to assign, click the green "Assign Activity Packs" button" in the top-right corner.

How can I modify the pacing of Quill's diagnostic recommendations?

After your students have completed the diagnostic/skills survey that you assigned, Quill will automatically generate recommended activity plans for them based upon their scores. You can then assign the resulting recommended activities from your Recommendations page in your "Diagnostics" report (to learn more about that process, click here).

When assigning these recommendations, you'll have the option to either:

  1. Assign all of the recommendations at once, by clicking the green "Assign Activity Packs" button OR

  2. Stagger the recommendations, by using the "Uncheck All" button to un-check the activity packs, and then manually checking off as many activity packs as you'd like to assign at that time.

To assign all of the recommended activity packs at once, click into your Recommendations Report, and select the green "Assign Activity Packs" button as shown below. Once assigned, those packs will be marked with a green check to indicate they have been loaded into the students' dashboards.

(Note: You can tell recommended activities apart from non recommended activities by the blue background and the black check mark of the recommended activity packs.)

Alternatively, to stagger the recommended packs, and/or assign them in a customized order, click the "Uncheck All" option to remove the black checks from all highlighted activity pack boxes.

Then, manually check off each of the activity packs you'd like to assign immediately and click "Assign Activity Packs", as shown in the GIF below.

All assigned packs will be marked with a green check to indicate they have been loaded into the students' dashboards. The other (un-assigned) recommended packs will remain highlighted in blue, but will not be assigned as of yet. You can come back and check off more activity packs to assign when you and your students are ready.

How can I preview a diagnostic/survey’s recommended packs?

After your students have completed the diagnostic/skills survey that you assigned, you can then assign the resulting recommended activities from your Recommendations Report (to learn more about that process, click here). When assigning those recommendations, you can preview any recommended pack, its activities, and the items in each activity to get a sense of their difficulty level.

To preview a recommended pack before assigning it, simply click the "View Pack" button that corresponds with the activity pack in question.

That "View Pack" button will bring you to an overview page of the activity pack, where you can read a summary of the pack and its content, as well as its estimated length. You can then use the "Preview" feature from that page to click through any individual activity within that pack.

Finally, you can either return to the Recommendations Report to assign that pack, or, if you'd like to modify the pack, you can click the "Select Pack" button in the top right corner of the screen to remove any activities you'd like before assigning it to your students.

How many diagnostic/skills survey recommended packs should I assign to my students?

After students have completed a Quill Diagnostic or Skills Survey, you can view and assign recommended activity packs to each student based off of their initial results. You can choose whether to assign all of the recommended packs in one click, or to pick and choose, revisiting the Recommendations Report to assign more packs as needed.

In general, we've found that students make progress when they are completing 2-4 activities on Quill per week. Each activity takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Since each recommended pack contains (on average) between 4 and 7 activities, teachers can generally expect a recommended pack to be completed in 1-2 weeks. Of course, students may need more or less time depending on the number of activities in the pack, their level of difficulty, and students' level of proficiency. For related reading, this article explains in further detail how you can assign and modify the recommended packs to help students pace themselves.
