How do I assign Quill Reading for Evidence Activities?

Quill introduces our newest writing and reading tool – Quill Reading for Evidence.

Quill Reading for Evidence, our new reading and writing tool for students in grades 8-12, is now available! This article will walk you through how to access Quill Reading for Evidence activities and teacher resources, and how to assign activities to students.

How to assign themed packs of Reading for Evidence activities

Navigate to the Assign Activities tab and click the Browse featured activity packs card.

On the next page, click the Browse Independent Practice Activity Packs card.

This will bring you to a list of Quill's pre-made (featured) independent-practice activity packs. Locate the filters at the top of the page and select the Reading Texts filter. You can also click here to access the page directly.

You'll see blue activity packs labeled, Evidence-Based Writing. Each of these activity packs contains 3-4 Quill Reading for Evidence activities on compelling nonfiction topics with a related theme, such as land restoration efforts or sports & recreation.

When you click one of those blue activity packs, you'll be taken to the activity pack's overview, which answers the following questions:

  • What will students be doing?

  • What CCSS is this activity pack aligned to?

  • What is the theme of this pack?

  • How much time will students need to complete this pack?

  • What will students be reading?

  • Where can I access additional resources for this pack?

From an activity pack's overview page, you can preview any of the included Quill Reading for Evidence activities by clicking the Preview link to the right of each activity name. You will be able to preview the activity as a student, and even respond to prompts to see the AI feedback in action!

Once you're ready to assign an activity, click the green Select Pack button in the top right corner of the page.

You'll be brought to the Review and assign page, where you can enter and edit activity pack details.

In the Name the assignment section, you can optionally name your activity pack.

In the Review activities and pick due dates section, you have the option to set a Publish date (the date that this activity pack will show up in your students' Quill accounts), set a Due date, and see if any of the included activities have been assigned to any of your students before.

In the Choose classes or students section, select the classes and students to whom you would like to assign the activity pack by checking the boxes next to their names.

After setting up the activity pack, click on the green Assign pack to classes button in the top right corner of the page.


How to assign individual Reading for Evidence activities

Alternatively, you can view and assign individual Quill Reading for Evidence activities and create and assign a custom activity pack from our activity library.

Go to your Assign Activities tab and click Explore all activities in our activity library.

You'll be brought to Quill's full activity library. On the top left side of the page, under the Activities section heading, check the toggle next to Independent: Reading Texts.

For each activity that is now listed, you can click the dropdown arrow to the right of the activity's name to see a brief description of the activity.

How to create and assign an activity pack of Reading for Evidence activities

Once you've filtered to see only Quill Reading for Evidence activities, you can check the boxes to the left of their names to select them or save activities to later assign them by clicking the bookmark symbol.

To assign the activities that you have selected, click the green Assign button in the top right corner of the page.

You'll be brought to Quill's Review and assign screen, where you can enter and edit activity pack details.

In the Name the assignment section, name your activity pack.
