Learn how to read data reports for Quill Reading for Evidence activities.

When a student completes a Quill Reading for Evidence activity, you will have access to data reports that show the data for the student's completion of the Quill Reading for Evidence activity.

How Quill Reading for Evidence activities are scored

Currently, Quill Reading for Evidence activities are not scored. For this reason, students will not receive a percentage score for a Quill Reading for Evidence activity. When students begin a Quill Reading for Evidence activity, they will see the message below.

This is a safe space to practice your writing, so it won't be graded. Your teacher will see your revisions, but there are no scores or points.

Because Quill Reading for Evidence activities are not scored, the data reports in your Quill account and on your students' Quill accounts will mark the score with the copy, Completed or N/A.


How do I read the Activity Summary for Quill Reading for Evidence

On the Activity Summary report, Quill Reading for Evidence activities are indicated by a book icon. When a student completes a Quill Reading for Evidence activity, the square representing it will be blue to show that the activity has been completed.

Hover your mouse over a square representing a completed Quill Reading for Evidence activity to see a menu that shows more information about the activity and the student's performance on the activity.

At the bottom of this menu, the number highlighted in green indicates the number of prompts to which the student submitted a correct response, and the number highlighted in orange indicates the number of prompts to which the student submitted an incorrect response. Because each Quill Reading for Evidence activity has three writing prompts, the sum of these numbers will always be 3.


How do I read the Activity Analysis for Quill Reading for Evidence

You will see the copy, N/A, in each of the Score fields in the Student reports table in the Activity Analysis for a Quill Reading for Evidence activity.

When you click on a student’s name in the Student reports table in the Activity Analysis for a Quill Reading for Evidence activity, you will see the student's responses to each writing prompt that they saw in the Quill Reading for Evidence activity and the feedback that they received for each response that they submitted.

Tip 💡

The bolded words that you see on a student's Student reports for a Quill Reading for Evidence activity in the Activity Analysis indicate the revisions that students made. However, when students are completing a Quill Reading for Evidence activity, the bolded words that they see indicate where they need to make a revision for a spelling or grammatical error.


How do I read the Concepts report for Quill Reading for Evidence

In a student's Concepts report, the Academic Writing category indicates a writing skill used in a Quill Reading for Evidence activity.

The percentage to the far right of each writing skill shows the percentage of times that the student correctly used the writing skill when completing a Quill Reading for Evidence activity. For example, the student in the screenshot below...

  • Used precise evidence to illustrate a contrast (completed a but writing stem) 64% of the time.

  • Used precise evidence to illustrate a consequence (completed a because writing stem) 73% of the time.

  • Used precise evidence to illustrate a cause (completed a so writing stem) 64% of the time.


How do I read the Standards report for Quill Reading for Evidence

While Quill Reading for Evidence activities are aligned to several Common Core ELA standards, the Standards report will show the standard, RI.9-10.1 (Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.) for Quill Reading for Evidence activities.

For the standard, you will still be able to see the number of students who have completed an activity with the standard, how many activities you have assigned that are aligned with the standard, and how much time your students have spent on the standard. However, please note that the Proficient field will read N/A because Quill Reading for Evidence activities are not scored.
