Quill Lessons are synchronous, teacher-led instructional activities that can be used for whole-class or small-group instruction. Quill Lessons provide opportunities for teachers to model their use of writing skills and for students to practice writing skills. Quill Lessons also provide follow-up independent-practice activities that you can assign to students immediately after the Quill Lesson.

Assigning Quill Lessons From the Diagnostics Report
If you have already assigned a Quill Diagnostic to a class, and the students in that class have completed it, Quill will recommend a practice recommendation activity pack of Quill Lessons associated with a writing skill to the class if more than 50% of students in the class demonstrate a need for writing instruction in that writing skill. To assign these practice recommendation activity packs containing Quill Lessons...
Navigate to the Diagnostics report in the My Reports tab.
Click the View results and recommendations button that corresponds with the Quill Diagnostic whose practice recommendation activity packs containing Quill Lessons you would like to assign.
Click the Practice recommendations tab in the menu on the left side of the subsequent page.
Scroll to the Whole class instruction heading at the bottom of the page
The practice recommendation activity packs containing Quill Lessons that have a Quill icon and are highlighted in green are recommended.
To assign one of these practice recommendation activity packs containing Quill Lessons to your students, click the check box next to the Quill Lesson's name and click the Assign activity packs button.
Assign Quill Lessons From the Activity Library
Quill's activity library allows teachers to search through all of Quill’s activities and assign any one of these activities.
To assign a Quill Lesson through Quill's activity library...
Navigate to the Assign Activities page and click the Explore all activities in our activity library card.
In Quill's activity library, check the Whole Class Instruction filter to only see Quill Lessons activities.
From there, you can search for keywords in the Search for concepts, activities, and more field, check additional filters, and preview Quill Lessons to find the Quill Lesson that you would like to assign.
Once you find a Quill Lesson you would like to assign, check the box next to the Quill Lesson's name and click the Assign button.
On the subsequent Review and assign page, name the activity pack containing this Quill Lesson in the Name the assignment section. In the Review activities and pick due dates section, you have the option to set a Publish date (the date that this activity pack will show up in your students' Quill accounts), set a Due date, and see if any of the included activities have been assigned to any of your students before. Lastly, in the Choose classes or students section, select the classes and students to whom you would like to assign the activity pack by checking the boxes next to their names.
Assign Quill Lessons From the Featured Activity Packs Page
To assign a featured (pre-made) activity pack containing Quill Lessons...
Navigate to the Assign Activities tab and click the Browse featured activity packs card.
Click the Browse Whole-Class Lesson Activity Packs card.
Filter the activities by Grade level range and Pack type.
Click on the card corresponding with the activity pack that you would like to assign.
On the subsequent page, after reviewing and previewing the activities contained in the activity pack, click on the Select pack button.
On the subsequent Review and assign page, name the activity pack containing this Quill Lesson in the Name the assignment section. In the Review activities and pick due dates section, you have the option to set a Publish date (the date that this activity pack will show up in your students' Quill accounts), set a Due date, and see if any of the included activities have been assigned to any of your students before. Lastly, in the Choose classes or students section, select the classes and students to whom you would like to assign the activity pack by checking the boxes next to their names.
Launching Quill Lessons
We recommend previewing the lesson before launching it with your students, so you can explore the script, practice the teacher model slides, and become accustomed to the interface.
To launch a Quill Lesson...
Navigate to the My Activities tab and click the Launch Lessons sub-tab.
Use the dropdown menu in the upper left of the page to select the class to which the Quill Lesson you would like to launch is assigned, find the Quill Lesson, and click the Launch Lesson button to the far right of the Quill Lesson's name to get started.
If this is your first time assigning a Quill Lesson, you will see onboarding pages. Read through the onboarding pages and click the Next buttons until you reach the end of these pages.
If you would like to launch the Quill Lesson without making any customizations, click the Select button.
If you would like to customize your Quill Lesson, click the Customize dropdown menu and select the Make Copy option.
Once you see the Quill Lessons interface, you have successfully launched the Quill Lesson, and students can join the Quill Lesson from their Quill accounts!
